Elephant & Castle takes centre stage in the work of Eva Sajovic, who has lived and worked in the neighbourhood for more than ten years. While photography is her preferred use of medium, Eva’s efforts to contextualise the frenetic energy of the area have prompted numerous collaborations and community projects with artists and locals.

About the artist
“Sajovic’s practice focuses on the largely Latin American community in Elephant and Castle, a part of London gripped by a massive redevelopment scheme which threatens drastic changes to the area’s demographic complexion.”
Lewis Bush
“Eva Sajovic perceives a wider political and historical context for her work, in terms of who controls the narrative about the place in which she’s worked for so long.”
Diane Smyth

London, UK
Eva Sajovic’s (b. 1976, Slovenia) work is defined by her participatory practice and engagement with marginalised communities. Visceral portraits documenting individuals affected by displacement and urban regeneration are typical of Sajovic’s oeuvre. Her collaborative process encourages her subjects to choose how they represent themselves, thus giving power to individuals who otherwise have little control over their circumstances. The artist’s latest work focuses on her own community in Elephant and Castle, an area of London which is currently under threat from regeneration. Sajovic lectures at Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College of Art.
